By Mark
Took these out of the box and headed off on a 2,000 mile trip over 5 days. I was wearing the boots at least 12 hours each day. They broke in quickly and are comfortable. I hit significant rain on the second day of the trip and my feet stayed dry. Temperatures along the route ranged from the high 30's to the low 90's and my feet were comfortable. The only issue I found was the hard sole. The day it rained I was slipping on any painted surface. Since that was on the second day it could have been the boot soles were not broken in. This is the only reason I gave the boots 4 stars out of the max 5. Overall I would not hesitate to purchase again. Size of boots are true. I wear a 9.5 US in bates uniform shoes and a 9.5 US in the boots. For comparison I wear a 10.5-11 US in a Nike athletic shoe.

On Tuesday, September 4th, four days after I purchased these boots I rode 700 miles from Philadelphia PA. to Knoxville TN. Hurricane Isaac had come ashore and moved through Louisiana at the end of August, then moved slowly to the northeast dumping heavy rain all along its path. The timing of my trip took me directly through the remnants of Isaac. Needless to say, it was a very wet ride. Twice I hit rain so heavy the cars in front of me disappeared into a heavy gray blanket. With visibility reduced to a very dangerous level I took the next exit ramp (thankfully on both occasions an exit ramp was close at hand). For a trip like this high quality rain gear is a must and my Bates Escalante boots kept my feet dry and warm. The leather is supple. The boots offer excellent support with a cushioned insole that delivers a high level of comfort right off the shelf, no break in required. Worth every penny, just buy em!

Just completed [Aug/Sept 2012] a 4 week 5000 mile plus bike ride around western US from 36 to 113 degrees [3-44 C] and two serious rains. These boots are excellent. Great fit - I have wider than average feet, light so you can walk easily - even over trails on sightseeing sites, flexible, easy to get on and off. Cannot recommend them highly enough - and half the price of the HD equivalent.
