Product Description
The Slate collection has rugged styling, using quality leather uppers combined with a durable, yet lightweight, sole. This air-cushioned sole is hard-wearing, with good abrasion and slip resistance. A leather with a subtle grain and an oily surface combined with a traditional lightweight leather, with the added advantage of being water-resistant.

From the Manufacturer
It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two founders decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

By Randall Metcalf
I have owned about fifteen pairs of Docs over the years so I am obviously a big fan. These boots are one of the best looking pair I've seen from DM. They have a classic styling that stands out just a little but not to the point of looking ridiculous. The leather uppers seem to be of good quality and are thick but not too stiff. The faux leather midsole is a nice touch and adds to the vintage look. As far as comfort, these boots feel surprisingly good right out of the box. I expected a short break-in period, but I've worn the boots several hours now without a hint of discomfort. Other reviewers have commented about the boots being over sized. I ordered my usual size 12 US and the fit is perfect. One of the problems with Doc Martin is their unwillingness to offer half sizes. Not an issue for me, but I'm sure it is for many. It is, of course, too early to tell about durability. Only time will tell, but I've had good luck in the past and hopefully that will continue.

By Chris Bulatewicz
I have size 11 feet (US) and I ordered the size 10 UK (US 11) in order to compensate. The boots were WAY too big. Had to send them back and get the UK 9 (US 10) and they fit and I still have a good amount of room. I don't see how this makes any sense at all that I would need to drop a full size but whatever, these seem like awesome boots. Buying some big 'ol insoles to fill up the rest of the room. Will update my review once I've broken them in!
- Never got a chance to break them in because they fit so awkward that I had to return them. I ended up with Timberland Earthkeepers and love them.

By Douglas D. Evans
These are a very handsome pair of boots. a bit of warning though; Size 9 UK Dr. Martens usually fit me rather perfectly, but these are a bit roomier. My guess is they wanted to leave some room for a thick pair of wool socks. I couldn't possibly fit into a smaller size. Other than that I love these boots.
